State and Local Laws Affecting Trucking

Are there state and local laws that apply to the operation of a CMV?

Weight Limit Sign

State and local laws and ordinances regulate trucking operations, in addition to federal law. For example, states may regulate maximum load weight, vehicle size (weight, width, and length), CDL training and testing requirements, road and fuel taxes, and insurance requirements.

Weight Station

CMVs are required to stop at weigh stations (or scales) so state officials can inspect and weigh trucks for compliance with state requirements.

Bridge Height

Many state roads have low clearance areas where CMVs are restricted due to height. This can include roads with low bridges. Damage and injuries when trucks hit low bridges can be significant.
